I had an interesting experience today. I was down in Needle Nook and in came an acquaintance of a friend of mine. The acquaintance had lost her house to a fire and was starting to replace her belongings, I gather. She had been in the antiques shop across the street as she was looking for new silver. Silver new to her, I should say.
She had found a pattern she liked and had a xerox of it. She said it was very close to the silverware she had that had been destroyed in the fire.
On the way home I was thinking about it. If you lost your silver flatware, or for that matter, anything you have had for a long time, and you had to replace it, would you buy:
(1) Something just like the flatware you lost.
(2) Something very similar.
(3) Vaguely similar.
(4) Totally different.
I don't know why I decided to ask this, but must confess, I am interested in your answers and am hoping you will post on my blog or write to me personally.

I don't have silver, but if I lost my china, I would probably buy something different, since my tastes have changed. If it was something inherited, that might be different... I'm not sure I would want to replace that.
ReplyDeleteSilver wouldn't even make my list of things to shop for; I'd be so glad not to have it around to have to hand wash and polish anymore! You can bet I'd replace it with dishwasher-safe stainless steel and spend the rest of the insurance money on replacing much more important things -- like STASH!
ReplyDeleteDepending on the item lost, my tendency would be to replace it with something different. If it had sentimental value that would be lost and replacing it wouldn't really feel the same. Now that I think about this more, if I lost everything in a fire in my home, I doubt that I would try to duplicate much, if anything.

I would try to find the pattern that was lost just to see if it could be found. But to purchase something, it would have to be totally different. My life would have changed due to the loss, so it would be my chance to change.
ReplyDeletetotally different. In fact, I now have both my flatwear and china and my mother's flatwear and china and I like her's much better than my own. When did I become my mother? I never intended it to happen, but I also see her now when I look in my mirror.

I have noticed that as I grow older, my tastes change and sometimes to a great extent, so to answer your question, I would go with whatever I would fall in love with. It might be a bit similar and then again perhaps not at all.
